Happy St. Patrick's Day! Despite the legends that connect him to luck, Patrick wasn't actually a very lucky guy. He was kidnapped as a young man, made to work as a herdsmen, escaped, then nearly died of starvation. It wasn't until much later in this life that things turned around for Patrick, largely attributed to his faith and calling.
It is a reminder that luck is a tricky word. When things work out, is it just because of a lucky break? Or is luck not even a real thing - our success is just based on hard work? When we have hindsight perspective, can we look back on a circumstance and only then realize it turned out to be lucky? Or, is it as one author notes, "where ability and opportunity overlap?" Where does our spirituality and theology come in to play?
Life is a complicated journey. Sometimes things work out, and sometimes they don't. For me, the concept of luck is tied up tightly with gratitude. I hope that today you'll take time to look at your life and count blessings. I hope you can see the goodness in some unanswered prayers. And I hope you find you're feeling lucky... or better yet, I hope you are feeling fortunate.
We plan the way we want to live,
but only God makes us able to live it.
Proverbs 16:9
